Girl in Niger fights forced Marriage
A young girl in Niger has taken her own family to court over a forced marriage plan.
Balkissa Chaibou had high hopes of become a professional in the medical field in the future, but her dreams were cut short when she learnt that without her consent, that she had been promised to her own cousin as a bride. In Niger forced marriages are amongst the highest in the world.
Balkissa was promised to her cousin when she was just 12 years old. The coming marriage haunted her while she continued to school and pursue her academic ambition. But by the time she was 16, her arranged husband showed up suddenly for the marriage rites.
Her future in jeopardy, Balkissa decided to fight for her rights by taking her family to court.
