The Argentine striker has surpassed Legendary striker Gabriel Batistuta as the nation's leading goal scorer.

Lionel Messi achieved this feat when he led Argentina to the Copa America final after defeating USA 4-0 in the semi-final.

The four-nil routing of the U.S team began when zequiel Lavezzi scored through a header.

3 minutes later, Argentina captain doubled the lead with a terrific free-kick.

That goal was his 55th goal. And now the Barcelona star is Argentina's record goalscorer.

Skilled forward Gonzalo Higuain of Napoli scored a third goal, which he converted from close range.

50 minutes later Higuain doubled his goal tally four minutes before full time through a Lionel Messi assist.

Thus ended a terrible night for the talented U.S team who were not just a match for their Argentine counterparts.

The amazing Argentine squad that defeated the U.S are as follows;

Romero, Mercado, Funes Mori, Otamendi, Rojo, Augusto Fernandez, Mascherano, Banega, Messi, Higuain and Lavezzi.

With the 28 year old Messi in their lead and with his newly achieved historic landmark under his belt, Argentina will now face the winner of the match between Chile and Columbia in the Copa America final.
