A man who purchased  one of the world's most expensive shirts made entirely of gold has been allegedly battered to death, police said.

Datta Phuge 48, made headlines in 2013 when he bought a shirt made with more than 3kg of gold and worth £186,943-reportedly to improve his luck with women.

The money-lender, from western Pune, was nicknamed "the gold man".

He liked to were pure gold all over his body.

Indian police report that about 12 people attacked Mr Phuge in Pune, India, on Thursday night.

The police believe it was not a robbery, but a dispute over money that led to his murder.

They have confirmed that 4 people have been arrested and held for questioning in connection to the crime.

Mr. Phuge had been invited to a party by one of the suspects, and he attended with his 22 year old son.

On the way to the party he was ambushed and attacked with stones and a sharp weapon.

His son witnessed his murder, but was spared by the killers.
