Home sweet home. A place of safety and security for a family. An ideal refuge—But not for this family. It was a tragic twist that was triggered by turmoil from a bitter divorce.
And this woman shot and killed her own Children in cold blood rather than give estranged husband custody.
Former couple Miguel and Carola were going through a divorce after she filed on February 22, 2016, writing that their 10-year marriage was "irretrievably broken". One year later, she filed for a protection from abuse order, accusing her husband of "inappropriate contact" with their 4-year-old son. The claim seemed rather false to the Children and Youth Services, and they later dismissed the case.
They kept suing each other over their two children. But when Miguel sued for custody of his kids, a judge issued a temporary custody arrangements where he spent time with the children every other weekend and after school until 7pm. Sadly, it ended in tragedy.
District Attorney Craig Stedman told reporters Tuesday that the "only small comfort" was that the children appeared to have been shot in their sleep. It makes one shudder just thinking about it.
Here is what Stedman has to say: "I tell people, in my job, some days are worse than others, and this is one of the worst, and certainly one of the darkest."
Carola shot and killed her own two children and the family pet dog, before setting the house on fire and commiting suicide.
