Even stars get overwhelmed when they meet their idols and fellow stars. But in the last three decades it's hard to remember a megastar who was quite as famous as the late King of Pop, MJ.
So what happened when one of his biggest fans got to speak with him for the very first time? He turned to a confused and overwhelmed mess that's what.
Hollywood actor Zac Efron never really met Michael Jackson in person. but he did have an emotional phone call with the late entertainment legend. In case you didn't get this—Efron is a self confessed Jackson super fan.
Several years ago, the 30 year old actor, was fortunate enough to have a phone conversation with his idol—which unfotunately was the one and only time they ever communicated. On that occasion, he unexpectedly ended up on the line with Jackson while in Paris promoting one of the High School Musical movies. According to him, he was 20 or 21 years old then. He shared this treasured memory when he appeared on The Graham Norton Show recently.
When the phone call occurred, he was with HSM director Kenny Ortega. Kenny who happened to be an acquaintance of Jackson and eventually worked with him on his documentary and film This Is It just before the singer's death, ended up taking a call from Jackson while out to dinner with High school musical star Efron.
Here is how Zac said it went down:
"His phone rang, and I remember I got this look, like ... 'You want this phone call.' I was like, 'Okay,' so I came over and was like, 'What's going on?' He goes, 'It's Michael Jackson.'"
Shocked and elated, Efron took the call and rambled on to Micheal about how he was a huge fan and how Jackson was his hero. "I was just at a loss for words," he recalled. "He [Jackson] said, 'That's really nice. Can you hand the phone back to Kenny?'"
But then, it wasn't over. When Jackson realized who he'd just been talking to on the phone, he asked Ortega to put him back on the phone and said: "Oh, this is Zac from High School Musical? I love what you do. I'm a huge fan." Of course, at this point, Efron said he broke down.
"I lost it. I lost my balance. I think I fell over into the wall ... I just started crying. I was a mess."
But then, Efron once again told him that he was his hero and "the reason I do what I do," and that he'd shown him how to dance and how to shine, Jackson himself started crying, too.
The few emotional minutes they spent on the phone, soon got even more tear jerking for the actor.
"He ended the whole conversation with something along the lines of, 'Hey Zac, isn't it awesome? Dreams really do come true, don't they?" Efron said.
An amazing story. Check out Efron's narration of that moment in the video below.
