Federer makes amazing claim about Serena Williams being the greatest tennis player of all time

The debate on who is the greatest tennis player in history has been raging for years. But the man whom many consider the best tennis player ever to grace the courts, has had very little to say on the subject, as he focuses on his incredible game, breaking multiple records even at the twilight of his career.
Roger Federer greatest tennis player ever
But recently,  Roger Federer has made a rare statement regarding the GOAT (greatest of all time) debate. And guess what? He didn't name himself. He ended up calling Serena Williams "one of the greatest, if not the greatest tennis player of all time" across the sport.

The Swiss superstar who has changed the face and rules of tennis within the last two decade with his spectacular play, excellence and mind blowing longevity was featured on the cover of the current WSJ. Magazine, accompanied by a feature story which mentioned the resilient Spaniard Rafael Nadal has been considered Federer's greatest rival. But based on the stats, Federer and Serena Williams are more similar in age and tennis achievements. The major difference between them being they are male and female. And many argue that the maen's game is light years ahead of the women's game.

Williams who is now 36 years old, has 23 Grand Slam singles titles, one behind Margaret Court's record of 24 titles. While Federer, also 36, has 20 Grand Slam titles, which is the record on the men's side. His closest rival is Nadal with 16 slams to his name. 11 of them being the French open crown.

Roger Federer believes Serena Williams deserves to be called the greatest Tennis player of all time

No doubt about it, currently, Nadal is the greatest clay court player in history. Men or women.

Serena Williams herself recently returned to tour following the birth of her first child, and next week in Paris will play her first Grand Slam tournament since her victory alongside Federer at the 2017 Australian Open. She has dropped in rankings due to her long absence but she's working to get back to her best. A difficult task at her age, but with Fed and williams, we have seen that theese two are full of surprises.

Here is what Federer had to say about Serena:

"It's been fascinating to watch," Federer said. "She had a totally different upbringing – I came up through Switzerland with the federation, she did it with her dad and her sister.
"It’s an amazing story unto itself—and then she became one of the greatest, if not the greatest tennis player of all time."

Asked if he meant on the women's side or as a whole, Federer replied, "Overall."
Always the one to give fellow players past and present their due, (even at the expense of his own)  Federer then "ticks off the staggering stats of players like Williams and Steffi Graf, which eclipse those of anyone in men's tennis, especially... factor[ing] in all of Serena's doubles titles." in a state ment to the Wall Street Journal.

But the article also describes Federer adding that it is a tricky subject, especially as players in previous eras did not always chase records the way today's players have done.
"It's not fair to compare, actually," he said. "But we know [Serena] is all the way up there. I’m probably up there with somebody," he said. "Maybe there’s a group, a best of five – and if you’re in that group, you should be pleased and happy."

"I'm in full admiration of Serena. And Venus too, by the way," he added.
Well so are we Roger, but we are also full of admiration and awe of you.
Federer's return to the grass court season is hotly anticipated ans fans hold their breath to see if he can add another grand slam to his already impressive tally.
