Red Devils boss Jose Mourinho has been,SACKED by the club after leading them to the most disastrous first half to the Premier League season in the last 28 years.
Not looking particularly enthusiastic, the embattled Mourinho was pictured arriving at the training ground at 9am on Tuesday - before being called to a face-to-face meeting with executive vice chairman Ed Woodward where he was told he was fired.
Manchester United then officially released a statement, regarding the Special one's sack at 9:46am. And Mourinho is set to receive a staggering £22.5m pay-off with the club still in the Champions League race.
It wasn't entirely unexpected. The club released a statement on their website which read: 'Manchester United announces that manager Jose Mourinho has left the club with immediate effect.
'The club would like to thank Jose for his work during his time at Manchester United and to wish him success in the future.
'A new caretaker manager will be appointed until the end of the current season, while the club conducts a thorough recruitment process for a new, full-time manager.'
It has been a nightmare season so far for the club which has a rich history of success. Mourinho's two-and-a-half year reign came to an end following the club's worst start to a top-flight season since 1990. His last game was a 3-1 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.
There had been a number of worrisome issues regarding the Portuguese Manager's tactics. It is understood that club officials agreed that any progress under Mourinho had stalled this season and that, importantly, a number of the club's exciting youth prospects were not developing under the former Chelsea manager.
Even his formerly loyal players seemed to have had enough. The decision to sack the 55-year-old was made on Monday night, with the club well aware that players were stalling on new contracts because of him.
Poor decision making. It is understood that Mourinho's refusal to use Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial at Anfield was crucial to the decision to sack him, with the club unable to sit back and watch millions wiped off players' values while they rotted on the bench.
For some time, he was no longer on good terms with many top players; a very bad sign for any manager. Mourinho had lost the dressing room, having fallen out with a number of the club's top stars.
|The Special one had led the club to its worst start in almost 3 decades|
The players reacted to a recent tabloid story about 90 per cent of the players wanting the manager out by joking with each other: 'Who are the 10 per cent that want him to stay?'
New and capable hands needed quickly to put the season back on track. It is understood that Laurent Blanc, the former Manchester United defender and one-time France and Paris Saint-Germain manager, is a front-runner to take over at Old Trafford as caretaker boss.
Good ties with the club. The 53-year-old is a good friend of club legend Sir Alex Ferguson, and is available immediately.
A sad but expected end for Jose Mourinho at Manchester United.
